Laura Hubbard / William Jeffrey Auten wedding

My cousin, the Rev. Laura Hubbard, married William Jeffrey Auten on Saturday at Cramer Memorial United Methodist Church in the small Gaston County town of Cramerton, NC.

Her sister, the Rev. Susan Ewing, was one of the officiating pastors, which was kind of neat.

I had never been to Cramerton. I don't think I had ever heard of it. It is a town of maybe 2,500 along the South Fork of the Catawba River and has a railroad line that runs through town.

It was a mill village founded in 1906. In 1910 Stuart Warren Cramer bought the mill and changed the name of the town to Cramerton. No ego there, I suppose.

Cramer Memorial United Methodist Church is a lovely church. It's next to the Town Hall. Here are some photos of the church, the area and the Lail relatives at the wedding.

Wow, sounds like something out of a movie, but this is real court testimony on Monday about the 2001 murder of a Fresno, Calif., deputy: :

Helicopter pilot Jim Lail and slain deputy Erik Telen's mother were both crying as the pilot described coming under fire while trying to save Telen's life. Lail told jurors, "The kitchen, everything started falling off the shelves on top of us from gunfire. I kept trying to pull him but he was very big. I couldn't pull him." Lail says he shot back with one hand, as he tried to pull Telen's body with the other.

High school star Cole Lail in serious condition

I've done a couple postings about Cole Lail He's a star on William Blount High School's football team in Blount County, Tennessee. He was named to the PrepXtra defense first team in January, the premier regional high school all-star team.

He's a big, strong, tough football player. Tennessee, Stanford and North Carolina all would like him to suit up for them in college.

Today's he's in the hospital battling for his life. Lail developed bacterial pneumonia over the weekend and is in intensive care at a Blount County hospital.

There is a Web site where updates are being posted.

"He's a sick, sick, sick young man," William Blount football coach Scott Meadows told The Knoxville News Sentinel. "We need as many prayers as possible.".

Tony Lail, the Davidson County (N.C.) webmaster, has been showing off a new Web site design.

The Lexington Dispatch noted:

Tony Lail, the county's webmaster, presented a preview of the new Davidson County Web site, which will go live March 3. The new site will be topic-oriented instead of department-oriented and will provide crucial phone numbers, links and driving directions to users. The site will ask the public to become members of the site, subscribing with e-mail addresses to different departments lists.

The existing site is here and I'm guessing we'll see the new look there on March 3.

College recruiters have an eye on Cole Lail

GoVolsXtra.com says a high school football player to watch next year in college recruiting is Cole Lail of William Blount High School.

One to watch for next year at this time could be William Blount's 6-1, 220-pound linebacker Cole Lail.
He participated last Friday in the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio. The combine for 500 of the nation's top juniors coincided with the Army All-American Game for seniors. Lail was tested in the 40-yard dash, a 20-yard shuttle run, his vertical jump and 185-pound bench-press repetitions.

While these postings are usually about people with the surname of Lail or in the extended Lail family, every once in awhile Google delivers up someone with the first name of Lail. I think I have seen it twice as a woman's first name.

Today, my inbox had a link to a nice feature on Lail Hess and her Juniper Spoon catering business in Darlington, Ind. She specializes in organic, locally grown vegetables and healthy meals. On the business' Web site, it's called "hand-crafted" food. In addition to standard catering, she has a dinner deliver service.

Grant Ryan Edwards is the first great grandson of Clyde and Wilma Lail, grandson of Becky and Steve Carter, son of Amanda and Ryan Edwards.

He was born December 14th, 2007, which is the birthday of cousin Linda Orr and was the birthday of Grant's great, great, great, grandfather Flowers who was the father of Carrie Flowers Lail.

The quilt in the picture was made by his Great, Great Aunt Hazel Hubbard and the hat was made by Grandmother Becky.

Got a shout out from my cousin Linda Orr:

I have to admit I am not a NASCAR fan or understand the logic behind going around and around at obscene rates of speed but that's ok. Since I am the oldest Lail cousin (of the Jack D. Lail generation) I guess I am entitled not to understand it.

I don't have a great deal of really interesting news to post but thought I would say HI to all my southern cousins and hope that they will contact me some time in the near future. Merry Christmas to all.

Andrew Carter, son of Becky Lail Carter and grandson of Clyde Lail is the Pit Crew Coach for Roush Fenway Racing Sprint/Nextel Cup Teams.

He is responsible for recruiting and coaching the pit crew members of the Roush Fenway Cup teams. He is also responsible for the Busch and Truck series pit crew programs.

Andrew works on a daily basis with the crew chiefs and general managers. He answers to Jack Roush personally when he has a question. He also works in developing new pit crew members when time permits. The drivers are #99 Carl Edwards, #17 Matt Kenseth, #16 Greg Biffle, #26 Jamie McMurray, and #6 David Ragan. His main focus is the #99, #17, and #26 crews and/or backup squad.

Andrew says "Our crews can win or lose a race in the pits. It is easier to pass cars sitting still than it is on the race track. With the COT coming into play, the crews are more important than ever because the cars are all equal.It comes down to the driver and crew."
