Justin Lail gets Athlete of the Year honor

East Burke High had two male athletes of the year. Justin Lail was the starting quarterback on the football team and a senior captain on the basketball team.

With 745 passing yards on 32 of 73 passing attempts, Lail threw 13 touchdowns. He also rushed for 256 yards on 47 carries and had three rushing touchdowns.

On the hardwood, Lail averaged 24 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He had a 75.7 percent free-throw average and a 50.0 percent field goal average.

Lail earned all-conference and all-district honors in men's basketball. He will play basketball for Catawba Valley Community College.

Charles Lail retires

Science Instructor Charles Lail retired in early June from West Iredell High School after teaching at the school for 30 years.

"I've learned a lot through teaching," Lail said. "I've learned that teaching is an art form. Taking something so abstract and getting it across to students is something not everyone can do. You have to think outside the box and say to yourself, 'What's the best way I can get this to stick in their minds'?"

Train runs over man's legs; he uses cell to call 911 for help

A show that will be on the Oprah Winfrey Network, a cable channel coming next year, will feature the story of Truman Duncan. Duncan used his cell phone to call 911 after a train ran over his legs in 2006 and that accident is used by Celburne, Texas, emergency personnel as inspiration for their work.

During a recent filming of the TV show, Cleburne Fire Department Lt. Scott Lail, who was one of the first responders at the accident, said:

"It's really a miracle because Truman's injuries should have been fatal," Lail said. "Yet, you'll never meet a guy with a more positive outlook on life given the obstacles he had to overcome.

"It also teaches us [rescue workers] never, no matter how bad the injuries appear, to give up on a patient. When we saw Truman was willing to fight, we were willing to fight, too."

A Lail following the footprints of Bigfoot

A large footprint found in a field in Burke County has some wondering if it's a "Bigfoot" sighting.

A television show, "Rex Allen Theater Presents," investigated the story. Here's some more from the News & Advance in Lynchburg, Va.:

Rex Lail, the show's cameraman, said the show wanted to find out if the footprint was real or not, so they headed to the site.

Lail said the team captured video footage of the footprint on June 9 and within 12 hours had made a plaster cast of the footprint.

Lail said, "I still ain't convinced it's not a fake."

Simplified named best rock band in Charlotte

North Carolina regional favorite Simplified was named Best Rock Band at the third annual Charlotte Music Awards in November at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's Booth Playhouse.

In the band: Clee Laster (vocals, guitar), Chris Sheridan (guitar), Tim Lail (drums) and Chris Lynch (bass).

PHILADELPHIA -- On West Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, Pa., local businessman Robert Lail runs what he calls "YouTube for business."

"Most people don't know how big the corporate video market is," said Lail, who sold corporate training videos in the 1970s and 1980s before launching a telemarketing firm, MarketMakers, for technical products. "I think it's bigger than traditional media. There are 13 million companies out there. Some of those companies have their own TV studios."

Kelly Lail of Oklahoma gets scholarship

At Oklahoma City Community College: The Faculty Association Scholarship Committee recently awarded $250 scholarships to nine students for the spring semester.

The winners are Andrea Adams, Kandice Edwards, Melissa Ethridge, Kelly Lail, Alisha O'Lague, Jennifer Pearsall, Aurelien Quillet, Amber Sims and Renee Thomas.

Lail, a nursing major, said she was shocked to have been selected. "I live in Chickasha so I will probably use the money for transportation."

Sixty-five years ago, two teens from the same North Carolina community waited off the coast of France for the start of an invasion that turned the tide of World War II.

The friends were aboard different ships. But knowing someone from home was close by comforted each of them.

Pete Lail and Bill Brown had gone to Oak Hill High School in Caldwell County, joined the Navy together and sweated through boot camp side by side.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the 19-year-olds steered landing craft toward Omaha Beach at Normandy. On June 7, when their boats happened to pass, they recognized each other and waved.
